DIVIDED BY A COMMON LANGUAGE!

An Irishman once commented that America and Britain are two countries divided by a common language.
Brits understand soccer and Americans know what trousers are. But other vocabulary differences cause problems.
One British charity worker offended her Texan hosts by saying “I could murder a fag!”. In British slang, she really wanted a cigarette; to the Texan it sounded as if she wanted to kill a gay person. If an American exclaims, “Nice pants!” Brits will think he is admiring their underpants, rather than their trousers. A Brit asking to borrow a rubber will cause astonishment in the United States, where rubbers are condoms, not erasers.
When an American asks for the bathroom in England, they will show him, a room with a bath. He should instead ask for the loo or lavatory, or look for sign for Gents, Ladies, Cloakroom or Public Convenience. The Brits will also be confused if he asks for the restroom.
There are also innumerable differences of idiom. At American junctions you must YEILD, on British roads you GIVE WAY. In the New York subway, they warn you to watch your step; on the London underground, to mind the gap. The British study the American War of Independence; in the US it’s celebrated as the Revolutionary War.
A British lexicographer Ernest Gowers considered British usage definitive, as English originated there. American journalist, HL Mencken, disagreed: “When two thirds of the people who use a language call it a freight train instead a goods train, they are right; the first is correct usage and the second a dialect!”. So they remain divide by a common language….

Events in Umbria during the Christmas period!

From 8 December 2006 to 5 January 2007, the fifth edition of Soul Christmas will take place, in the little town of Passignano sul Trasimeno. This is one of the most important events of Christmas in Umbria. We are speaking about a very interesting fair of Gospel music in Italy: in fact in a period between Christmas and New Year, the best gospel groups existing in Europe are staying in Lake Trasimeno, to make what is called a real Festival of the Emotions.
This successful occasion is very important because it expresses about emotions and feelings which felt during the Christmas Period ; all this is represented by the best Afro-American black voices, singing in the theatres and the churches of the Trasimeno. The entrance is free!

THANKSGIVING DAY

Thanksgiving, or Thanksgiving Day, is an annual one-day holiday to give thanks, traditionally to God for what we have been given up to the close of the harvest season. In the United States, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November, and in Canada it is celebrated on the second Monday in October. In the United Kingdom, Thanksgiving is another name for the Harvest festival, held in churches across the country on a relevant Sunday to mark the end of the local harvest, though it is not thought of as a major event, compared to Christmas or Easter, as it is in other parts of the world. This tradition was taken to North America by early settlers, where it has become most important and celebrated by people of all creeds and their major celebration of the year for friends and family to come together!
….and the typical dishes for Thanksgiving dinner is the famous turkey with potatoes!

RENAISSANCE MASTERPIECES DISCOVERED IN OXFORD – England

The two lost paintings by the Renaissance artist Fra Angelico have been discovered hanging behind a door in a modest two bedroom terraced house in Oxford. The paintings of the Dominican saints, which are expected to fetch a combined total of more then 1£ million at auction, belonged to a 77 year-old spinster who died earlier this year. The discovery, hailed as one of the most exciting for a generation, has solved a 200-year-old mystery. Angelico was commissioned by Cosimo De Medici to create an altarpiece in the 1430s. He painted eight panels for the high altar at the Church and Convent of San Marco in Florence. However during the Napoleonic wars nearly 400 years later, the French split up the altar and the pieces were spread around the world.Over the years six of the works were identified in collections, but the whereabouts of the other two have remained a mystery until their discovery this year at the Oxford home of Jean Preston. Miss Preston’s father, Kerrison Preston, bought the paintings in America in the 1960s and gave them to his daughter when he died in 1974. At that time a probate value of £400 was placed on them. For the last 10 years, the paintings, measuring 15 inches by five inches, have hung behind the door of Miss Preston’s spare bedroom. She had no idea of their significance until shortly before her death in July, when a friend Michael Liversidge, former head of history art at Bristol University, was shown them and researched them.

One of the most important painting of Fra Angelico, called Polittico Guidalotti of 1448, was done at the height of his career and is now on display in the GALLERIA NAZIONALE DELL’UMBRIA, in Perugia, Corso Vannucci.
This painting was commissioned by the Guidalotti family for their own chapel in San Domenico Church.
Come to Umbria to discover the wonderful works of Fra Angelico and other Renaissance painters like Raffaello, Michelangelo, Perugino and Pinturicchio….

Villa Moscatelli on the Estate of La Preghiera in Umbria, Italy
October 2006 - www.lapreghiera.com or www.villamoscateli.com
From Orange County, California

Italy was the destination for celebrating my 60th birthday and three members of my family and two friends came along to help me celebrate. We spent 14 glorious days in Italy (Oct 9-23). Hands down the most wonderful part of the trip was our week's stay at Villa Moscatelli which is on the grounds of La Preghiera in Umbria. Our hope was to find a comfortable and charming place to relax, walk, read and eat and when we felt like it - venture out to visit other interesting places in the area. We accomplished this and more! From La Preghiera we were able to visit Assisi, Deruta, Siena, Cortona and Montone and still have plenty of time to relax and enjoy walking the countryside. The Villa accomodated the six of us in comfort and style. We loved the self-catering aspect of the villa since most of us are cooks and the kitchen had all the modern conveniences you could wish for. We enjoyed walking into Calzolaro for meat, fresh vegies, cheese, bread and wine. The owners, John and Liliana Tunstill were so gracious and welcoming - they are such an interesting couple! We especially enjoyed the evening we were invited to dinner, at the Monastery (LaPreghiera). Meeting guests from other countries and sharing a meal was one of the highlights of our stay there. We cannot recommend La Preghiera enough - it's a slice of heaven on earth, in Italy!
