With more than 800 years of history, La Preghiera was a monastic complex of the Mont'Ulivetani di Gubbio Friars, dating back to the late 1100’s. Restored and converted to a luxury country house estate by resident owners Liliana Richardson de Tunstill and her husband John, rated a Residenza d'Epoca by the Umbria Region Authority and Umbertide Local Authority, the historic listed main house, adjacent cottage and private chapel nestle in landscaped gardens with views over beautiful woodlands and gentle hills.

Situated on a quiet road with easy access, just outside the village of Calzolaro, there are wonderful country walks in all directions. La Preghiera is in the north of Umbria, on the border with Tuscany, with Umbertide, Cittá di Castello, Montone and the real Green Heart scenes of Italy just minutes away, whilst the amazing hilltop cities of Perugia, Gubbio, Cortona, the land of Under the Tuscan Sun, and many others are within about thirty minutes drive. And within easy driving for day's visit to Siena, Arezzo, Florence, Spello, Assisi, Todi and Spoleto.

Offering luxury bed and breakfast accommodation with daily maid service, La Preghiera offers a warm welcome to its guests. It is a home, not a hotel, which guests are invited to share as friends rather than as clients. Sophisticated and elegant, without being stuffy or overly formal, La Preghiera offers relaxed formality with five star service.
Facilities include a light laundry service, internet access point, mobile phone service, refreshments during the day and an honesty bar in the evening. Each bedroom has a room pack with information about the local area, events and restaurants, and staff are on hand to help and give advice or reserve a table at a restaurant.
Walk along the sunlit upper loggia and enter the cosy reception area of La Preghiera. Relax in the large and comfortable sitting room, take breakfast in the elegant dining room, enjoy a game of billiards or browse through the books in the mezzanine library. Stroll through the elegant gardens or rest by the eco-friendly swimming pool.
The floors are tiled with terracotta, there are huge oak and chestnut beams throughout the house and stone fireplaces, and each of the eleven bedrooms has an en-suite marble clad bathroom. The furniture has been carefully chosen and each room is different, with hand-made painted tables, elegant chairs and antique wardrobes and dressing tables.

Minimum age for guests on a B/B basis at the Monastery is about 10 years old! Tips and gratuities are not expected, this is left to the discretion of our guests. All service, help and advice is gladly given, but as all the staff have now become part of the extended family at La Preghiera, finger snapping, ordering or impolite behaviour towards them, of which of course our guests would never be guilty, would be less than appropriate.
La Preghiera is also available for luxury villa rental on a self catering basis with accommodation for up to twenty two guests. Perfect for intimate wedding ceremonies, the chapel is available for multi-denominational or symbolic ceremonies and the gardens provide a perfect setting for an alfresco wedding reception, or to celebrate a special occasion.
Guests can choose to relax in the tranquil atmosphere of La Preghiera or choose one or more of the many activities available including truffle hunting, cookery courses, hiking or mountain biking and horse-riding or book on one of the organised special weeks like the Combination Holidays.
La Preghiera offers a peaceful and tranquil respite from the cares of everyday life, a haven of beauty in the midst of a minor architectural masterpiece.
